Australia opens borders to more people

Australia is taking the next step in opening its borders. Starting next week, students and those on work visas will be able to enter the country.

“Australia is reopening to the world,” says Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews at a press conference.

Early in the pandemic, in March 2020, Australia closed its borders. Only those with special permission were allowed in, and Australian citizens or those with permanent residency were prevented from leaving the country.

But since the beginning of November, entry and exit for Australian citizens and those with permanent residence permits has been permitted.

And starting next week, December 1, the country will take the next step. People with student or work visas will then be free to enter the country – provided they are vaccinated.

Vaccinated visitors from Japan and South Korea are also welcome.
