Austria totally shuts down – round-the-clock curfew

Austria is entering a total lockdown to curb rising infection numbers. Starting Tuesday, the population will be in isolation for three weeks.

The new, tough restrictions will apply until December 6, Chancellor Sebastian Kurz announced at a press conference.

He appeals to citizens to try to reduce socializing to a single person if possible.

”"Every social contact is one too many," he says, according to the APA news agency.

The curfew that previously valid between eight in the evening and six in the morning is now extended to apply all day, with the exception of essential shopping and exercise. All non-essential shops must close, and in the service sector, hairdressers and masseurs, for example, are forced to cease operations.

”"Those who can work from home should do so. In addition, all teaching, even for young children, should be done remotely."”

The new rules, which were partially leaked to the media on Friday, have been called a ”March-like lockdown” in Die Presse. The description refers to the strict regime in the spring, when Austrians were only allowed to leave home to work, buy food or medicine, or help others.

According to Kurz, the restrictions are being tightened because previous measures were not enough to stop the development of corona in the country, writes APA.
