The number of corporate bankruptcies rose by 24 percent in May, compared to the same month the previous year.
This is shown by statistics from the business and credit information company UC, according to a press release.
Among the industries with the largest increase in the percentage of bankruptcies are the hotel and restaurant industry (86 percent) and wholesale trade (90 percent). The construction industry also continues to increase by 28 percent.
It is clear that the retail, hotel and restaurant sectors have also suffered from many of the negative consequences in the longer term as consumers have had to hold tighter to their wallets.
”"We are now starting to see the more persistent effects of the economic crisis and which industries are being hit harder than others. So far this year, we have seen that bankruptcies in the retail sector have increased the most, closely followed by the construction sector," says Johanna Blomé, economist at UC.
During January through May, the increase in the number of corporate bankruptcies was 27 percent at an annual rate.
