Terminal 1 at Berlin Brandenburg Airport has been evacuated after an alarm about a suspected dangerous substance, German media reports.
The alarm was raised at 5:45 p.m. on Thursday after a woman approached police at the airport and reported that she had toxic substances in her handbag. The woman has been arrested and an area around the bag has been cordoned off.
“Since it is an unknown substance, danger cannot be ruled out,” an airport spokesperson told Tagesspiegel.
Firefighters wearing protective suits and special equipment have been sent to the scene to examine the bag.
Check-in in Terminal 1 has been stopped and, where possible, moved to Terminal 2. In addition, train service to the airport has been cancelled.
