The new Berlin Brandenburg Willy Brandt Airport, or BER, is in urgent need of more funding.

”"We need money quickly, we need cash," says airport CEO Aletta von Massenbach to the Tagesspiegel newspaper.

The airport only has enough cash to stay open until the first quarter of 2022, she says. Berlin Brandenburg opened last October, after a decade of delays, amid the coronavirus pandemic. It has been said that the project is cursed, following numerous technical problems and allegations of corruption.

The airport has continued to suffer from problems, such as long queues, a lack of staff and dirty premises. Next week, a plan to address all the shortcomings will be presented and the airport manager will meet with Transport Minister Andreas Scheuer.

The owners, the German government and the federal states of Berlin and Brandenburg, have promised to invest 2.4 billion euros by 2026.
