Outgoing US President Joe Biden will lift Washington's designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism.

The White House announced the deal on Tuesday, saying that in return Cuba would release imprisoned regime critics. It was unclear how many prisoners were affected by the deal.

”An assessment has been completed, and we do not have information that would lead to Cuba being labeled as a country that supports terrorism,” said an unnamed government official.

But US President-elect Donald Trump is expected to reinstate the terror designation. Trump labeled Cuba a terrorist organization during his final days as president in 2021 during his first term.
