Dutch authorities have handed out a fine of 290 million euros, equivalent to 3.3 billion kronor, to the American taxi app Uber, according to a press release.
The Dutch Data Protection Authority has concluded that Uber violated the European data protection law GDPR by transferring sensitive driver data from Europe to the US. This includes account details and taxi licenses as well as positioning data, photos, payment information and identity documents.
In some cases, drivers' criminal records and health data should also have been transferred, according to the data protection authority.
The case came to light when more than 170 French drivers accused Uber through a French human rights group, which gathered information and filed a complaint with French authorities. The case ended up in the Netherlands, where Uber has its European headquarters and tax residence.
Uber has notified the authority that the company intends to appeal.
