Egypt and Morocco broke new tourist records in 2025, cementing their positions as the continent's most visited destinations. One of the tourist magnets was the new museum, which reportedly cost 11 billion to build.

In 2025, Morocco had 19.8 million visitors, up 14 percent from the previous year. The number of visitors to Egypt increased by 21 percent to 19 million.

Behind the tourism boom to Morocco are, among other things, new air connections with direct flights to both China and the US. The numbers were also boosted by football fans who flocked to the ongoing African Championship being held in Morocco.

The increase in tourism to Egypt is said to be driven in part by interest in Egypt's new Grand Egyptian Museum, located at the pyramids of Giza. The museum was formally inaugurated in November 2025. Expectations are for five million visitors to the museum annually. The museum is estimated to have cost around $1.2 billion to build, equivalent to approximately SEK 11 billion.

Egypt's Tourism Minister Sherif Fathi has previously told local media that the goal is for the country to have 30 million visitors per year by 2031.
