Birka Cruises is being closed down. According to Björn Blomqvist, CEO of the Eckerö Group, cooperation negotiations are now beginning, writes The Åland newspaper. According to Åland Radio has operated traffic between Stockholm and Mariehamn for 49 years.
A total of 509 employees are affected, 43 of whom work at the head office in Stockholm while the others work on board the ship Birka Stockholm.
– The corona pandemic is the main reason. This business has had weak profitability for a long time and now we see no other option than to close down, says Eckerö Group CEO Björn Blomqvist to Ålands Radio.
On its website, Birka Cruises writes that everyone who has booked a trip will receive an automatic full refund.
