The US Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) announced on Wednesday evening that Boeing is not allowed to increase production of the 737 Max aircraft model.

The FAA's decision increases concerns about the growth plans of airlines and suppliers worldwide, writes Reuters. At around 12:15, Boeing shares had fallen 3 percent in early US trading.

The FAA said the decision means Boeing can continue producing Max aircraft at its current rate, but not increase it. The agency did not say how long the restriction is expected to be in effect.

Among the company's subcontractors, Spirit Aerosystems fell 5 percent and Howmet Aerospace fell 2.5 percent in premarket trading.
