The announcement came a few hours after the US Federal Aviation Administration required the company to implement changes to the aircraft model by April.

The aircraft manufacturer says that for several months - since a Lion Air plane crashed in Indonesia in October last year - it has been working on improving the software, but does not mention Sunday's crash in Ethiopia as a reason for the update.

On Monday, several countries and airlines announced that they would keep their planes of the model on the ground until further notice.
