American aircraft manufacturer Boeing plans to hire 10,000 people this year. The need for more engineers and more factory staff is described as great, despite hiring 23,000 people in 2022.

In addition to covering up for the fact that many people are retiring - around 8,000 last year alone - Boeing wants to increase the production volume of its 737 Max and 787 aircraft with the additional staff.

At the end of 2022, Boeing had just over 156,000 employees, which is about 5,000 fewer than before the pandemic, despite a 10 percent increase in staff last year.

Boeing had a peak of 175,000 employees ten years ago, but lost its position as the United States' largest employer in 2020 – overtaken by online retail giant Amazon.

The recruitment need in aircraft manufacturing in Europe is also described as large by Boeing's European arch-rival Airbus, with just over 130,000 employees.

Airbus announced this week that it plans to recruit 13,000 people in 2023 – which is estimated to result in a net increase in staff of 7,000 employees.

Boeing – marked by years of problems, first with the 737 Max aircraft and then with the effects of the pandemic – reported its sixth consecutive quarterly loss this week. Profitability is being pressured by higher costs, but cash flow has turned upward.
