Booking sites are draining hotels of billions

Remove

The Nordic hotel industry pays over SEK 2 billion annually to intermediary services such as Booking.com, Hotels.com and Google.

If hotel guests book rooms through these third-party channels, hotels must pay a commission that usually amounts to between 15 and 25 percent.

This is what Dagens Næringsliv writes. "We alone now pay around 250 million kronor annually in such commissions. It is a huge challenge," says Torgeir Silseth, CEO of Petter Stordalen's chain Nordic Choice.

According to Silseth, the hotel chain's commission payments to Google alone amounted to 3-4 million kronor a year five years ago - that sum has now grown to over 70 million.

”"In practice, we get to compete and bid on our own brands. And our opponents, who often outbid us, are the same online giants that take high commissions and at the same time provide us with traffic. They have enormous financial power," says Torgeir Silseth.
