A major rescue operation has been underway outside Møre og Romsdal in western Norway.

The Hurtigruten ship MS Kung Harald experienced an engine failure in the middle of the ocean.

“Mayday, mayday. This is Kong Harald. We are out of progress” was heard from the radio at the rescue center, according to NRK.

A rescue operation with helicopters and boats was immediately dispatched. Visibility was very poor and the wind was strong. An ambulance boat ran aground during the rescue operation.

On board the ship there are 236 passengers and a crew of 70 people, writes VG.

The large ship began to drift and was only 500 meters from land when the ship's anchor caught.

– The ship started an engine and now it has set course for Molde under its own power, says rescue leader Andreas Bull to VG.
