Airline giant British Airways (BA) will lay off 36,000 of its employees, the BBC reports. This corresponds to 80 percent of BA's cabin crew, ground staff and those working at the head office. No employees will be made redundant.

The decision was negotiated with the trade union Unite over a period of one week.

On Tuesday, BA closed all traffic from London Gatwick Airport, all BA employees there and at London City Airport are among those laid off.
