The British government has decided to support plans to expand Heathrow Airport with a third runway, according to Transport Secretary Chris Grayling.
The issue will therefore be decided by the British Parliament within three weeks.
”The plan is crucial to our national interests,” says Chris Grayling in Parliament.
The issue is dividing the two major parties in parliament, the conservative governing Tories and the social democratic opposition Labour party.
One critic is British Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson, former mayor of London.
Heathrow is already Europe's busiest airport, but there is no room to expand traffic with existing infrastructure.
The controversial plan that has been put forward is estimated to cost around £14 billion (approximately SEK 165 billion) to implement.
