The UK is introducing an entry ban on travellers from all of South America and Portugal following the discovery of a new virus variant in Brazil, the ban will take effect from Friday, January 15.
”"I have taken the urgent decision to ban entry from Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Cape Verde, Chile, Colombia, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Panama, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, Uruguay and Venezuela, from tomorrow at 4am, following the new strain of the virus detected in Brazil," British Transport Secretary Grant Shapps wrote in a post on Twitter. Portugal was added to the list of countries with entry bans shortly after the announcement due to the country's close ties with Brazil. People working in the transport of goods from Portugal will be exempt from the ban.
The entry ban will not apply to British and Irish citizens, but they must remain isolated for the first ten days after arrival.
The virus strain discovered this week in travelers from Brazil shares certain characteristics with the mutations previously discovered in the United Kingdom and South Africa.
