Thousands of flights have been canceled or delayed in the northeastern United States after a winter storm dumped snow, in the midst of one of the busiest travel periods of the year.
At least 2,700 flights are affected on Saturday, 2,000 of them in the northeastern United States and the Great Lakes region, CBS News reports. Several major airports are warning travelers of traffic disruptions.
In New York, snowplows were busy Saturday morning clearing and salting streets, according to the AP news agency. New York City received about 6 inches of snow overnight Saturday, slightly less than expected. Communities further north received up to 10 inches.
Motorists have been warned to leave the road during the storm and are urged to make way for snow removal. There is a high risk of fallen trees blocking roads while visibility is poor, weather services warn.
The storm weakened in the morning in its path to the southeast, but more snow is on the way and the cold is expected to persist.
