China has launched a so-called vaccine passport, which shows a person's vaccination status and test results for Covid-19. The digital certificate is available to Chinese citizens via the social media platform Wechat and is to be used, among other things, when traveling.
The issue of vaccine passports is a hot topic in much of the world, and expectations are high that such a certificate will facilitate the reopening of societies. The Chinese vaccine passport is believed to be the first to be put into use.
The US, EU and UK, among others, are discussing or have plans to introduce similar variants, but critics fear that the system will lead to increased surveillance and create an A and B team of vaccinated and unvaccinated people.
