The Green Party's congress has backed a proposal to ban air traffic on shorter routes where trains can replace it.

The Green Party is tightening its tone against the airline industry. Ahead of the congress, the party board had supported a motion to introduce a ban on domestic flights where the equivalent journey by public transport is less than a certain number of hours.

The Congress also supported this, which means that the proposal will become part of the party's policy.

Exactly how and which flight routes will be banned is unclear, and will be investigated.

The motion refers to France, where the National Assembly has decided to ban domestic flights where travel by train takes less than two and a half hours.

MP's climate policy spokesperson Lorentz Tovatt has said that a ban in Sweden would cover the Stockholm-Gothenburg route.

The party congress has also decided to push for the phasing out of all subsidies to airports whose social benefit is not decisive. The decision is justified by the fact that municipal airport companies receive large amounts of grants and subsidies from municipalities and regions, tax money that, according to MP, goes to finance fossil-dependent activities.
