The United States has dropped the requirement that anyone traveling into the country must have a negative COVID-19 test result, the CDC announced. The decision is being evaluated on an ongoing basis and may be reintroduced if a new, contagious variant of the virus emerges.

The announcement should be seen against the backdrop of pressure from the travel industry, which has been hard hit by the pandemic.

The requirement was tightened in November with the omicron variant. All travelers to the US, regardless of vaccination status, have had to show a negative test result that is no older than 24 hours.
