Climate activists have carried out actions at a number of airports in Sweden.

Several people were arrested and Bromma Airport was closed to air traffic for just over an hour.

At noon on Sunday Alarms began to come in about attempts to stop air traffic around the country. At least seven airports were affected. These included people who entered runways or passengers who refused to board planes.

The action at Bromma Airport led to it being closed to all air traffic for just over an hour.

”"During that time, there were four arriving flights that were redirected to Arlanda," says Robert Pletzin, press manager at Swedavia.

When TT speaks to him in the afternoon, he says that air traffic is more or less normal.

”"But there are some consequential delays as a consequence of the actions that have been taken."”

For example, a number of departures from Bromma on Sunday were delayed by several hours. 

The police are classifying the incident as aviation sabotage or airport sabotage. At least 16 people were arrested at the airports, including four at Bromma.

An operation was also carried out at Arlanda.

”"There are two women on board an airplane. They have behaved in a way that has led to the decision to remove them from the airplane," says police spokesperson Per Fahlström.

Later, two other passengers on another plane at Arlanda were also arrested, according to the police.

A woman was arrested at Malmö Airport.

”"She entered the airport area and then went to the runway," says police spokesperson Filip Annas.

The police also arrested people during actions at Landvetter Airport and at the airports in Halmstad, Kalmar and Växjö. 

In a press release, climate organization Extinction Rebellion says that it has carried out actions at several Swedish airports during the day.

The aim is to "be the wake-up call needed to accelerate work on real measures that lead to reduced emissions," the organization writes in the press release.
