Over 500 climate activists from Extinction Rebellion and Greenpeace, among others, entered Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam on Saturday, writes Picture

The activists have made their way to several private planes while others have cycled around the airport area. The aim is to draw attention to the harmful effects of air traffic on the environment and climate.

The campaign has some impact on traffic.

There were reports that an ambulance flight had been blocked. This was later denied by a spokesperson for Schiphol.

Military police have arrested up to 200 people, reports A.D.

Some arrests were reportedly made under heavy-handed conditions. In the evening, the police operation was still ongoing. A number of activists are reported to have chained themselves to private planes.
