This January was the coldest Europe has had since 2010, with an average temperature of 2.34 degrees, according to the EU's climate service Copernicus.
Despite the cold snap that hit both Europe and the United States, January was the fifth warmest on record for the entire planet, with temperatures above average across much of the planet.
The global average temperature was 1.47 degrees above pre-industrial times.
