Jernhusen is now starting the construction of a brand new station building, a sister building to Gothenburg Central Station that will receive passengers from the Västlänken. The central station is thus taking the next important next step in meeting the increase in passengers expected in the region.  

The new station building, named Gothenburg Grand Central, will be ready when Västlänken station Centralen opens as a sack station in 2026 and will then be the largest of three stations. The building will be connected to Nils Ericson Terminalen and the existing central station. Through Västlänken, the capacity for regional and commuter trains will now be greatly strengthened and the journey will be easier, faster and with fewer changes, which means that train travel in the region is expected to increase by 45 percent. 

– The number of passengers in the region will increase significantly with the Västlänken. We at Jernhusen are pleased to be able to contribute with a new station building that will allow future passengers to easily get off the regional trains and either continue on to their next trip out into the country, to their workplace or out into the city, says Cecilia Pettersson, Head of Business Area Project Development. 

Gothenburg Central Station, which was first opened in 1858, has been gradually expanded to meet the needs of travelers. In 1923, the station building was expanded to what we know today and the last major restoration took place in 1993. Three years later, the new Nils Ericsson Terminal was also built and in 2003, the addition Centralenhuset was also built, which houses both the station, hotel and offices. Now it's time for the next step.  

– Just as the station previously had to be expanded to meet needs, we now need new solutions to handle the increasing number of passengers waiting. We are adapting the area to the expansion of public transport capacity, adding additional station functions and making the place better for passengers, continues Cecilia Pettersson.  

Part of Central City Gothenburg 

The new station building will serve as an entrance to the new, station-close district of Centralstaden Gothenburg. The district includes both the new and existing station, the Park Central office building and the recently approved detailed plan north of the central station. Here, the city is linked with infrastructure and large flows of travelers. The goal is to create an attractive meeting place to encourage more people to travel by public transport in a safe and vibrant urban environment. 

– It will take many years before Centralstaden is fully built, but within a few years we will see how history is woven together with the future when more people live, work and enjoy city life in the region's very best location close to public transport, adds Caroline Ahrnens Martin, Regional Manager Project Development Gothenburg.  

Facts:  

• The new station building is linked to the Nils Ericson Terminal and thus also the existing central station. The building is primarily a station building but houses three upper office floors.   
• The house is being built with a facade made of 100 percent recycled brick, using climate-improved concrete, recycled steel and other climate-smart materials to the greatest extent possible. 
• Biodiversity is strengthened through the design of the roof environment. In addition to living areas for office tenants, an environment that attracts insects and birds is also created here. Biotope roofs, meadow flowers, trees, shrubs, perennial plantings, insect hotels and various types of birdhouses are examples of things that will be found on the roofs. 
• The building will have several entrances and a station hall measuring around eight meters in height. 15,000 square meters will accommodate a mixed range of stations, services for travelers, shops, restaurants and businesses. The three upper office floors, which will be completed in the first half of 2027, will have space for around 700 workplaces spread over almost 8,000 square meters. 
• When the first station in Gothenburg was opened in 1858, it was Sweden's very first railway station. 
• Reiulf Ramstad Architects is responsible for the design.
