
Statistics from the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth for August 2020 show that the number of guest nights at hotels, campsites, holiday villages and hostels decreased by 34 percent compared to August 2019. Swedish guest nights decreased by 14 percent while foreign guest nights decreased by 77 percent compared to August the previous year.
-There was no real recovery for tourism in Sweden in August either. Domestic travel has certainly returned to relatively high levels, but there are still very few foreign tourists compared to normal. Stockholm is particularly hard hit, says Kristian Seth, head of analysis at the Swedish Agency for Economic and Regional Growth.
Stockholm and Värmland counties lose the most
The largest decrease in the total number of guest nights was accounted for by Värmland and Stockholm counties. The number of guest nights in Stockholm during August decreased by 62 percent compared to the previous year, while Värmland decreased by 41 percent. Västmanland county fared best, decreasing by 7 percent.
Continued decline in guest nights from abroad
The decrease in guest nights from abroad remained large during August and is at the same levels as the previous months. The number of foreign guest nights decreased by 77 percent compared to August 2019. The corresponding figure for July 2020 was a decrease of 81 percent. Guest nights for the largest foreign market in Sweden, i.e. Germany, decreased by 71 percent compared to August the previous year. Guest nights from Denmark, Finland and Norway, decreased by 63, 89 and 92 percent respectively compared to August 2019. The smallest relative decrease was accounted for by Polish guest nights. The number of guest nights from Poland amounted to just over 27,000 and decreased by 28 percent compared to the corresponding period the previous year.
1.6 billion in lost accommodation revenue Total accommodation revenue for hotels, holiday villages, hostels and camping during August amounted to just over 1.9 billion, a decrease of 46 percent compared to August 2019. The worst hit were hotels with a loss of 51 percent compared to August 2019. Accommodation revenue at hostels and holiday villages decreased by 44 and 23 percent respectively. Camping sites were the ones that fared best with a decrease of 20 percent compared to the corresponding month last year.
