Copenhagen Airport had its busiest summer ever. During June, July and August, 9.9 million passengers travelled through the airport, an increase of 3 percent compared to last year. At the same time, long-haul traffic continues to grow, especially to Asia.
In August alone, 3.3 million travelers passed through Copenhagen Airport. During much of the summer, the airport had more than 100,000 travelers per day.
“We have never had more summer travelers in the airport's history. The terminals have been full of travelers from early morning until late at night,” says Peter Krogsgaard, Commercial Director at Copenhagen Airports.
Spain remains the largest
Southern Europe dominated holiday traffic and Spain maintained its position as the most popular country.
A total of 789,000 passengers traveled on the routes between Copenhagen and Spain during the three summer months. This was 3 percent more than last summer.
Italy had an even stronger development. Traffic increased by 10 percent to 714,000 passengers.
A total of 2.9 million passengers travelled between Copenhagen and the five largest countries in the Mediterranean region. Spain and Italy were followed by France with 484,000 passengers, Greece with 456,000 and Turkey with 427,000.
– Spain and Italy are clear favorites among many Danes and southern Swedes who fly on summer vacation from Copenhagen, says Peter Krogsgaard.
Asia drives long-haul growth
Although eight out of ten passengers at Copenhagen Airport travel within Europe, long-haul traffic continues to grow.
During the summer, 1.5 million passengers traveled on long-distance routes to and from Copenhagen. This corresponds to 12 percent of total traffic and is 5 percent more than the previous year.
Growth is primarily driven by Asia, with new direct routes opening to Ho Chi Minh City and Seoul, while capacity has been expanded to Tokyo, Shanghai and Beijing.
– In general, the routes to Asia are doing very well, and we expect the high demand to continue during the winter, says Peter Krogsgaard.
During the summer, Copenhagen Airport had a total of 37 long-haul routes to destinations in Asia, Africa, the Middle East and North America.
