The future of electric scooters in Copenhagen is at stake – but the decision won't be made until two weeks from now. The city is postponing a decision to ban the rental of electric scooters on municipal land.

The industry held its breath. On Thursday evening, Copenhagen's municipal leadership was to take a position on a proposal to ban the rental of electric scooters on municipal land.

However, rental companies are being held on a leash for another two weeks after politicians decided to postpone the decision.

”"There would have been too little time for preparations in connection with today's meeting," says Social Democrats group leader Lars Weiss to TV 2 Lorry.

The proposed regulation has caused the industry to react with dismay. Kristian Agerbo from rental company Voi says he is shocked.

”"We have had over 600,000 users in Copenhagen. We have been happy to be able to contribute to Copenhageners being able to get around the city," says Agerbo, who is also a spokesperson for the industry organization Løbehjulsalliancen.

The industry has proposed that special parking spaces for electric scooters be created on municipal land and that they should only be parked there. However, several parties on the left have argued for a ban on renting on municipal land, when the issue has previously been discussed in Copenhagen's Technology and Environment Committee.

On municipal land, more benches, more public toilets and more space for cyclists should be prioritized over electric scooters, believes Technology and Environment Mayor Ninna Hedeager Olsen (Union List). But that does not mean a total ban on electric scooters, she emphasizes.

On the other hand, if the municipal land cannot be used, it remains to try to rent electric scooters through stores - and industry representative Agerbo does not see this as realistic.
