The number of passengers on Danish international ferries to Germany, Sweden and Norway was halved during the important summer season compared to the same period last year, according to statistics from Danske Rederier. The reason for the reduced travel during the months of June, July and August is primarily the pandemic.
”"We were aware that the summer would not be quite normal and that interest in traveling would decrease. Despite that, interest has been significantly less than we had expected," says Jacob Clasen, CEO of Danske Rederier.
He now fears that the reduced passenger pressure could mean that more ferry companies are forced to cut costs.
”We saw during the lockdown in the spring that routes were temporarily closed, or that they were reduced in frequency. It may become necessary again.”
”"In the coming months, we are dependent on the spread of infection decreasing and travel restrictions being lifted, then I believe that interest in traveling will return," continues Jacob Clasen.
