BRUSSELS (News Agency Direkt) The European Commission decided on Tuesday that the EU's Covid passport will be valid for nine months after the second vaccine dose for travel between EU countries.

This was stated by the Commission's Justice Spokesperson Christian Wigand at a press briefing.

The EU summit on 16 December called on the Commission to take such a decision.

The nine-month period (actually exactly 270 days) is extended in the case of a booster vaccination. The Commission has not yet determined the validity period of a Covid passport with a booster dose because scientific conclusions are not yet available in this area, said Christian Wigand.

”We certainly encourage citizens to take the booster dose earlier than nine months,” he continued.

Commission emphasized that it is a national issue how Covid passports are used within an EU country, for example for restaurant visits.

But the Commission encouraged EU countries to harmonise the validity period of such with the period for travel within the EU.

Furthermore, the Commission decided to adapt the rules for Covid passports so that it is clear whether the bearer has received three doses or a booster dose and only one dose was required for full vaccination (Johnson & Johnson's vaccine).
