Finnair, like all other airlines, has been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis and has been forced to lay off staff. The company is now resuming some of its long-haul flights, including to Asia, but due to existing agreements, must use foreign staff, reports Finnish public service broadcaster Yle.
This is being questioned by the Finnish staff who are out of work. On three of the routes that are being opened, there are no Finnish staff, says Jari Toivonen, chairman of the cabin crew union SLSY, to Yle.
”If outsourcing were to be abandoned, there would be hundreds of jobs in Helsinki,” says Toivonen.
SLSY hopes that Finnair will refrain from hiring foreign workers until Finnish staff have found jobs again. Finnair comments that if a cost-effective solution can be agreed upon, cabin services can be handled entirely by its own staff.
