Due to the serious situation in Cuba, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs advises against non-essential travel to the country. The decision to advise against it was made on February 12, 2026. The advice is valid until further notice.
Swedes in Cuba are urged to exercise caution and stay updated on developments and follow the advice of local authorities. Swedes are also urged to regularly check travel information from the Swedish Embassy in Havana via the UD Resklar app (including activating push notifications) or Sweden Abroad and sign up for the Swedish list.
Swedes in Cuba may have their travel plans changed at short notice. The Swedish Embassy in Havana therefore urges Swedish tourists to carefully inform themselves about the situation in the country and to stay in touch with their tour operators and airlines.

Power failure
There are widespread power outages throughout Cuba, especially outside the capital Havana. Even in Havana, the outages have become longer and more frequent than before. They occur irregularly and are difficult to plan for. Internet and telephone lines are functioning poorly, which is also affected by the many power outages.
Fuel shortage
There are major difficulties in obtaining fuel for vehicles, both gasoline and diesel. This affects all types of transportation, including public transportation, taxis and rental car travel.
Mosquito-borne viruses
There is currently a high risk of mosquito-borne viruses in Cuba. Mosquitoes carry the risk of transmitting Dengue, Chikungunya, Zika and Oropouchevirus. Travelers should take active measures against mosquito bites, such as:
- Mosquito repellent (it is difficult to get hold of mosquito repellent in Cuba so this should be brought along)
- Full-coverage clothing (long sleeves and long pants)
- Sleep under mosquito nets and in rooms with air conditioning
- Close doors and windows
- Avoid being outdoors when mosquitoes are most active (daytime for dengue fever)
The embassy recommends that Swedish citizens follow instructions from local authorities.

Prepare your trip and travel with margins to Cuba
As a traveler, you have your own responsibility to stay informed. If you are going to travel to Cuba, it is important to be well-informed before you travel and to prepare for your trip. Make sure you have a financial buffer so that you can cope with delays and unforeseen expenses.
The COVID-19 pandemic is still ongoing in parts of the world and may affect international travel. Countries you will be traveling through may have different entry and behavior regulations due to COVID-19. For example, there may be a requirement to wear a face mask on flights, hotels and public places, or you may need to show proof of vaccination before and during your trip.
Is your passport valid?
Please check carefully that your passport is valid, complete and with a blank page for stamps. The embassy advises that you not only have a valid passport, but that it should be valid for at least 6 months from the date of your arrival in Cuba.
Do you have the right insurance?
It is important to have insurance that is valid for the entire trip and covers planned activities in Cuba. Contact your insurance company and check the terms of your insurance.

Local laws and customs
As a visitor to another country, you should always remember to follow that country's laws, regulations, and customs. Swedish law does not apply, and the embassy has no way of getting you released if you end up in prison.

It is the traveler's responsibility to ensure that entry into Cuba is in accordance with the country's regulations. The Swedish Embassy and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs are not responsible for other countries' entry regulations or any visa requirements. Please note that entry and exit regulations can change at short notice.
