A consortium that intends to save the struggling Italian airline Alitalia from bankruptcy is in the final stages of negotiations this week, the country's industry and deputy prime minister Luigi Di Maio told RTL radio on Tuesday.
The state-owned train company Ferrovie dello Stato is racing against time to raise enough capital from the consortium of stakeholders for Alitalia's rescue.
”This week represents a critical stage and now we must make decisions,” Luigi Di Maio told RTL.
On Monday, sources told Reuters that the deadline for Alitalia's rescue could be extended by days, weeks or months beyond the June 15 deadline.
British Easyjet, among others, has previously been involved in the attempts to save Alitalia, but has withdrawn. In addition to Ferrovie dello Stato, several Italian-owned companies, including the postal company Poste Italiane and the investment company Cassa Depositi e Prestiti, the financial companies Fintecna and Fincantieri, have been mentioned as interested parties.
