The decision was made at 3:42 a.m. on Friday morning by the city council after a marathon discussion. Västerås Airport will be closed, writes VLT.
Earlier this year, the intention of the ruling parties S, L MP with the support of V was presented.
However, they say that the closure will not take place until the people of Västerås have had their say in a referendum. But it is not certain that the outcome will matter.
”"We respect that there will be a referendum, and we will not close the airport until the result is clear. But we do not yet know how many people will participate, that matters, although I think we should respect the will of the people," says municipal councilor Anders Teljebäck (S) to the newspaper.
The opposition parties want to keep the airport, partly for the sake of the business community. While the government believes that the cost is too great and that the financial deficit has persisted for several years.
