The Delta variant is causing the number of Covid cases to skyrocket again in several EU countries. Cyprus is now at the same crisis levels as in April.

The decline was steady throughout June as the number of new COVID-19 cases fell overall across the 27 EU countries. But now comes the rebound.

In the latest statistics from the EU's Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (ECDC), nine countries have again reported more than 100 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants in the past two weeks. The worst is Cyprus, which has even passed the 1,000-case mark – a level that no EU country has reached since the end of April.

Even that time Cyprus was the worst hit, with 1,145 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants. Right now, there are 1,068 new cases – almost twice as many as a week ago.

Spain follows closely behind with 377 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants, followed by Portugal (333), the Netherlands (304) and Luxembourg (225).

Sweden is the 15th country on the EU list, with 34 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants over the last two weeks.

Outside the EU, the UK is currently the worst affected with 571 new cases per 100,000 inhabitants.
