Denmark will open the border with Skåne starting Saturday night. The decision applies to people who are registered in the region.
On Thursday, Denmark announced that it would also open the border to residents of Skåne. Until now, Swedes living in Blekinge, Kronoberg and Västerbotten have been welcome to enter the country. Now, this also applies to residents of Skåne.
The information was confirmed by the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday afternoon.
The Danish border is open to regions that have had fewer than 20 new infected people per 100,000 inhabitants, on average, over the past two weeks.
Border open for selected regions
Skåne is now on the map at the Statens Serum Institut in Denmark. This means that Skåne now meets the criteria for residents of Skåne to be allowed to travel to Denmark.
– It feels fantastic, because then we are back where we were on March 13 when Denmark closed the border to Swedes. This means that we have succeeded in reducing the number of Covid-19 infections in Skåne. We are now at quite low numbers and that is what makes the Danes dare to welcome us, says Carl Johan Sonesson, chairman of the regional board in Skåne.
People from Skåne can go over for the day
Elsinore Mayor Benedikte Kiaer tweeted "HOORAY!" shortly after the news of the border opening came.
In addition to the border now being opened for people registered in Skåne, they will also now be exempt from the so-called six-day rule, writes DR Nyheder. This means that people from Skåne will be able to travel back and forth to Denmark during the day.
The border will open at midnight on Saturday night, Danish police confirm to SVT Skåne.
However, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs' advice against traveling to Denmark still remains in effect. A new decision is expected on July 15.
