A small dog died when an employee on board a United Airlines plane forced the owner to place the animal on the baggage rack.
The American airline takes full responsibility, calling it "a tragic event.".
The woman who flew from Houston to New York on Monday with a child and a small dog was forced by the staff to place the dog – which was carried in a small bag – on the shelf during the 3.5-hour journey, according to another passenger.
”"At the end of the trip, the woman found the dog dead. She was sitting on the floor crying, and all the passengers nearby were completely speechless," tweeted fellow passenger Maggie Gremminger.
The airline's spokesperson says that pets should not be placed on the baggage rack, and that the family has been refunded for their tickets.
