Thailand and Malaysia are following Vietnam and opening up domestic flights from the beginning of May, reports Nikkei Asian Review.
In Thailand, this refers to low-cost carrier Thai Airasia, part of the Airasia Group, and Thai Lion Air, owned by Indonesia's largest private airline. Both will start flying from May 1. Air travel has been halted due to the coronavirus pandemic since the end of March.
”"After closely reviewing the pandemic situation and government relief measures, AirAsia has decided to resume domestic flights and provide services for customers who need to fly whether for personal or business reasons," AirAsia said in a statement.
State-owned Thai Airways, which is at risk of bankruptcy according to media reports, intends to wait with its flights until the end of May.
In Malaysia, AirAsia will resume its flights on April 29. It stated that it also intends to resume domestic flights in India, the Philippines and Indonesia as soon as possible.
Vietnam has resumed domestic flights since April 23. Between the capital Hanoi and the large city of Ho Chi Minh in the south, the number of flights is 30 percent of previous normal levels.
