Domestic travel by Swedes increased in July 2021, compared to the same period last year. However, travel is not reaching pre-pandemic levels, according to an analysis conducted by Telia.
The telecom operator has looked at the movement patterns of Swedes during July 2021, compared to the same month in the previous two summers.
Swedes made nine percent more trips between counties than in 2020 and eleven percent fewer than in 2019. Travel between municipalities increased by five percent from last year, but decreased by ten percent compared to the year before.
Muskö in Haninge municipality stands out as a popular destination in the Stockholm area, with travel there increasing by 31 percent compared to last year and by a whopping 51 percent compared to 2019.
Gotland does the same. Travel there has increased by 32 percent from last summer and is only seven percent behind 2019. The majority of Gotland travelers are Stockholmers, whose travel to the island is already at 2019 levels.
Travel from Stockholm to Sigtuna has also increased, by 51 percent compared to 2020, indicating that more Swedes are flying from Arlanda Airport. However, travel between the municipalities is still 34 percent less than in 2019.
In the Västra Götaland region, the most trips in July went to Öckerö municipality, 37 percent more than in 2020 but 13 percent fewer than in 2019.
Travel to Simrishamn in Skåne County is largely at 2019 levels, with only two percent fewer trips made this year. Compared to 2020, travel there increased by seven percent.
Telia has also analyzed how many people stayed in a certain area during July and can conclude that the mountain holiday trend from last year, when activity in Härjedalen increased by 17 percent compared to 2019, is continuing. These visits increased by three percent.
