The lockdown in Shanghai due to Covid-19 has entered its third week, which is a week longer than initially planned, Sky News reports.
The extended lockdown comes after the city reported 24,000 new cases in the past 24 hours. The spread of the infection is the most serious not only in Shanghai but also in all of China since the virus outbreak in late 2019.
Although the infection numbers may seem small to Western eyes, they are high for a country that practices zero tolerance. However, this has come at a price as protests have erupted in Shanghai over the coronavirus policy. Videos have emerged of people protesting in front of police demanding supplies.
In the manufacturing-heavy city of Guangzhou, lockdowns have also been tightened as infection numbers rise. Schoolchildren have been sent home and will be taught online for at least a week, according to a statement from local authorities.
