Some of Easter Island's famous statues have been damaged in a 100-hectare forest fire that has raged on the island. The World Heritage-listed area around the Rano Raraku volcano is one of the worst affected.
"The damage caused by the fire cannot be undone," the island's mayor, Pedro Edmunds, told local media.
Easter Island belongs to Chile and gets its main income from tourism. In August, the island reopened to travelers after being closed for two years due to the pandemic.
