Egypt is now free of malaria, the World Health Organization (WHO) announced, describing the fight to eradicate the disease in the country as ”a century-long effort” and an end to a disease that has existed since ”time immemorial.”.
WHO considers a country to be malaria-free if it demonstrates that domestic cases of the disease have been stopped for three consecutive years.
In 2022, malaria caused more than 600,000 deaths worldwide, 95 percent of them in Africa, according to the WHO.
