Dubai-based Emirates Group's profit plunged 53 percent to $296 million in the first half of the year.

Within the group, the airline Emirates Airlines constitutes the largest part.

Profitability was weighed down by significantly higher fuel prices and unfavorable currency developments compared to the previous year.

Revenue, however, was up ten percent to $14.8 billion. For Emirates Airline itself, revenue was $13.3 billion.

If you exclude Emirates subsidiary Dnata from the accounts, the Emirates brand itself saw its results plummet by a whopping 86 percent to $62 million.

During the first half of the year, the number of passengers was 30.1 million, an increase of three percent. Capacity also increased by the same percentage during the period.

The remaining six months of the year are expected to be tough according to Emirates, which is hoping for a boost from Dubai Expo 2020 and new destinations.
