BRUSSELS (News Agency Direkt) The European Parliament's Transport Committee voted on Monday to gradually increase the share of green aviation fuel to 85 percent by 2050.
By a vote of 25-6, the committee tightened the commission's original proposal.
The share of green aviation fuel will increase from 2 percent in 2025 to 37 percent in 2040 and 85 percent in 2050.
The Commission proposed targets of 32 percent in 2040 and 63 percent in 2050.
The committee defined sustainable aviation fuel as synthetic fuels, certain biofuels and hydrogen. As biofuels are allowed forest waste, used cooking oil and animal fat, but not fuels based on food crops, feed and palm oil.
Renewable electricity may also be included in the share of sustainable fuels.
Furthermore, airports are required to facilitate airlines' access to sustainable fuels, including infrastructure for hydrogen refueling and battery charging.
The full European Parliament is expected to vote on the bill during its session on July 4-7.
Negotiations with EU country representatives can then start on the final version of the law.
