Unavoidable costs, such as VAT and credit card fees, must be accounted for from the start when a customer books a flight online, according to an EU ruling on Thursday.
The ruling comes in a dispute between Ryanair and the Italian competition authority AGCM, where Ryanair was accused of failing to disclose VAT surcharges, online check-in fees and credit card fees at the beginning of the booking process. Ryanair appealed the case, which has now been decided by the Court of Justice of the European Union.
The court states that unavoidable fees such as VAT for domestic flights, as well as unavoidable credit card fees, must be reported from the outset. However, the court writes that fees for online check-in do not need to be reported, unless there is an alternative to check-in for free – for example, physically at the airport.
