With a substantial train gap this autumn, the European Commission hopes to promote EU cooperation and point to the benefits of railways as a means of communication.

”"This train will also be a reminder that we still have a long way to go before rail becomes Europeans' first choice of transport," said Transport Commissioner Adina Valean in a press release after the route was announced.

The train – named Connecting Europe Express – departs from Lisbon on September 2nd, arriving in Paris on October 7th. It will stop in more than 70 cities in 26 countries along the way. Sweden will be visited in early October when the train will travel from Copenhagen to Malmö, Lund and Stockholm before returning south.

Who will travel on the train and what events are planned along the way have not yet been announced.
