The use of the EU Covid certificate is extended by one year, until the end of June 2023.

The decision was made on Tuesday, as a new wave of Covid cases appears to be sweeping across the continent, with new, more contagious sub-variants of the omicron virus. However, the new variants are not believed to cause more severe illness than the older, relatively mild omicron variants.

The certificate was introduced in July last year to facilitate travel between EU countries during the coronavirus pandemic. The document shows whether the holder has been vaccinated, has recently recovered from a COVID infection or has tested negative for the virus.

Almost two billion certificates have been issued.
