Portugal is bracing for a heatwave with temperatures reaching 43 degrees Celsius this weekend, while severe drought continues to grip the country.

The country's emergency management agency has put personnel on standby due to the risk of forest and terrain fires. According to weather forecasts, the extreme heat is expected to last for at least a week.

The government has declared a state of emergency regarding the fire risk, which gives the authorities increased powers such as banning bonfires and fireworks.
