Facebook and Instagram could be shut down

Facebook and its daughter app Instagram could be shut down across Europe this summer, it writes Politico.

Ireland's data protection authority has come up with a proposal to ban the transfer of Meta's (i.e. Facebook's) data from Europe to the USA.

”"If a new framework for transatlantic data transfers is not adopted and we are not allowed to use standard contractual clauses, we will no longer be able to offer our products and services in Europe," Meta wrote in a statement to the US Securities and Exchange Commission.

Other companies in Europe that send data to the US may also be affected if the Irish proposal goes through.
