Dutch military police launched a major operation at Amsterdam's Schiphol Airport after an alarm was raised about a situation on board an aircraft. However, it turned out that a pilot had accidentally triggered the alarm.

The operation began at 7 p.m., and the airport classified the incident as a "serious situation that could have a major impact on the population," reports the AFP news agency.

”"We are currently investigating a suspicious situation on board an aircraft at Schiphol," the military police, which is responsible for security at airports, among other things, wrote on Twitter.

Prime Minister Mark Rutte was informed about the operation.

An ambulance helicopter and rescue services were sent to the scene, and one of the airport's terminals was partially blocked off, Dutch media report.

At 7:30 p.m., police tweeted that passengers and crew were safe. Shortly afterward, Air Europa announced that a pilot had accidentally triggered the alarm.
